19 July 1885 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 19th July [1885]. Henry having rather a sore throat sent for Cini for him. Did not go to church. Afternoon went for a row out to the Edens’ garden. It appears after we left them last night Mr Eden got his steam launch & took the Ker girls & Miss Bagot out beyond the Lido to see the sun rise as the Venetians do. They told us. It was a curious sight to see a black line of people along the shore in the twilight– Then as the sun rose they took off their clothes & became a pink line & walked into the sea– Mr Vigor dined with us & we took him to the Giudecca but the fête was over & the bridge disconnected.
