29 July 1885 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 29th [July 1885]. Sat to Mr Vigor before breakfast. Ninina Brandolin called afterwards. We lunched at one & at 2 I had an audience with Queen Marguerita who was very kind & pleasant– She is getting stout & was badly dressed in a red cotton striped with white & trimmed with old Venice point– I hurried home, changed my dress & we went off with Sir John to the Edens & on to their garden with a Professor Bravasso who showed us how he managed to open bee hives & extract honey without destroying the wax or being stung. Went on in the steam launch to the Lido where we dined at a large picnic, Bronsons, Bagots, Edens, Capt. Briscoe &c &c. Lovely moonlit night & after a copious meal Carry Eden & I wandered down to the shore & sat a long time talking. There was a blaze of evening primroses growing all round.
