16 August 1885 — Rosenlaui
Sunday. 16th [August 1885]. At 8 o’clock Henry & I & Mr & Miss Maxwell & Miss Ritchie walked off to Schwarzwald which took us about an hour. We found Mr John Collins & his 2 sisters in law the Misses Huxley expecting us. Henry remained at the inn & the rest of us went on to the wood to pick wild strawberries. We got into a most lovely wood but there were few strawberries so we decided upon crossing the stream & getting into the wood on the other side. We were soon across the stream & then came the tug of war; there was a small moraine of loose shelly stone to get up—everybody made a dash up it & fell back disconcerted—& the two gentlemen had hard work to get us all up it. When we were once tugged up we found ourselves in the most lovely wood with any amount of strawberries & we wandered abt filling our baskets– At length we came down to the bridge across the stream & we parted with the Collier party asking them to tell Henry we would wait there for him. Miss Ritchie preferred hastening on & after Miss Maxwell & I had waited in vain more than ½ hour we decided also on going on the Rosenlaui. There we found Henry. He had given us up at Schwartzenwald & walked quietly back & lunched. We lunched & then rested. The evening’s post brought me a letter from Maria confirming the news about Alice’s engagement to Hallam Murray much to her & our satisfaction. After dinner I went to sit with Mrs Ball who is confined to her room.
