15 August 1885 — Rosenlaui
Saturday. 15th August [1885]. I went to paint again in the morng the same view of the Matterhorn. After lunch went for a walk with Henry. We went a little way on the Meiringen road & then turned up to the hill above the hotel. We found a lovely park like hill with fine trees & soft turf. We tried to find a short cut back to the hotel through the wood but only got deeper into the mazes of the forest so we had to make our way back & in a lonely glade we saw a fine large fox with bushy tail with white tip. He did not seem much alarmed by us but trotted into the thicket. A few minutes before we had seen another animal wh I took for a large cat but wh must have been Mrs Reynard. Found quantities of the tall dark blue gentian in flower & gathered a handful. Not finding the short cut we had to go all the way round to the bridge within sight of the Schwarzwald Hotel & got round that way. With the post wh comes in at 7 came a telegram from Maria that we are not to expect Alice out here as she was engaged– We hope to marry Hallam Murray.
