4 September 1885 — Baveno
Friday. 4th September [1885]. A wet wet day. I went to sit with Lady Tavistock who arrived here last night with her cousin Miss Rachel Gurney. We lunched (H & I) at the table d’hôte at 12.30. Abt 4 o’cl we drove with Addie & Rachel, the Crown Pss & 3 girls & all their suite up to the Villa Clara to tea. Met there Mr Shakespere the musician & his wife, Mrs Henfrey’s Aunt Mrs Goodeve. Mr Shakespere played the piano & played very well Mendelssohn, Wagner, &c &c. Abt 6 we came away with Addie Tavistock leaving the royal party behind us to practise. We dined with the Crown Pss in the Salle de Musique down stairs & then went upstairs to her own sitting room & we played cards with the young Pss. Old Maid & a game Mr Henfrey taught us called “Muggins.”
