5 September 1885 — Baveno
Saturday. 5th September [1885]. Very fine day. Wrote letters. Lunched at table d’hôte & afterwards sat in the garden. Mr Henfrey joined us & asked us to go at 2.30 to the church to practise for tomorrow’s hymns &c so we went up there with Addie & Rachel. It was 4 before we had finished & then we went off in a boat to the Isola Madre & took a little walk round the garden—then on to the Isola Bella where Addie & I began to sketch. As Henry & I dined at the table d’hôte at 6.30 we had to return to the Hotel before Addie & Rachel who dined in their rooms. In the evening the Princess sent for us. Addie & I went for a little while & then we went to Addie’s room, Henry & I, & Rachel sang a song called Emancipation day to the banjo & made us laugh very much.
