6 September 1885 — Baveno
Sunday. 6th September [1885]. I sent our maid Annie home to Venice with the Monkswell’s & Galetti who left for Milan. I went to church at 11 & walked there with the Royal party. Coming back I had to hurry on alone to be in time for table d’hôte luncheon. After lunch it rained a little & Henry & I put off driving to Belgirate to see the Cairolis. Morelli arrived from Milan just at lunch time & brought alarming news of the spread of the cholera & advised the Princess to leave at once. As I was out on my balcony after lunch the Pss came out on hers below & called me down. She was most perplexed & Ct Seckendorff coming in she consulted with him how she shd go to Venice & finally decided on walking to Stresa to see the Dss of Genoa & told us all to get ready so off we walked & just as we got near Stresa while I was walking with the C. Pss to my surprise she stopped to kiss a tall lady with white curls wh I saw must be the Dss. The Royal party went into the Dss’ Villa while Morelli, Lutteroth (the German artist with the Pss), Henry & I went to the Hotel des Iles Borromeo to have some coffee. After a while the Psses joined us there & sat in the garden having tea. Henry, Psses Sophia & Margaret & I went back to Baveno in the boat wh had followed us & the rest of the party walked back. Dined at table d’hôte & in evening went down to the Princess for a little while. There was a thunderstorm & heavy rain. Went to have tea in Addie’s room & some fun over Rachel’s singing.
