19 September 1885 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 19th September [1885]. Addie & I set out at 11 o’cl to go to Rialto to look for old silks. Just as we set out we met the Crown Pss in her gondola going to our door so we turned back. We found that they were only going to drop Herr Lutteroth to call on Henry & were then going on to Marcato’s & the C. Pss begged us to follow her wh we did & we spent all the morning looking over things there. We had to hurry back & dress to go off to lunch on board the P&O steamer Mongolia to meet the Princesses at 1 o’cl at a luncheon given by Malcolm & Capt. Fraser. We went over the ship & then sat down to an excellent cold collation. At abt 3 we all went away. The ship was gaily decorated with flags, the arms were manned & the sailors gave the Pss 3 cheers as she left. Addie, Rachel & I went shopping & then home to tea. We found Mr & Mrs Val Prinsep calling. He is Rachel’s uncle. She is golden haired, rather extravagantly dressed & not quite lady like. Ersilia & Maria Cozzi came to tea & Rachel sang to them accompanied by her banjo. At sunset Addie & I went out painting on the Giudecca. We went to dine with the C. Pss at the Hotel d’Europe & afterwards walked to the Piazza & took a turn there. The C Pss met the G. Duke of Saxeweimar & walked with him. Henry took the little Princesses off to Florian & gave them ices to their great delight & Addie & I being tired slipt home.
