20 September 1885 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 20th September [1885]. I was very tired & did not go to church. Looked through my old stuff with Addie. Mr Brown called. We lunched at 1 & at 2 went on board the Queen’s despatch boat & with the Psses & suite we went to Chioggia accompanied by Captn Acton. It was a lovely day & very hot—strong scirocco. Addie & I sketched boats as we passed them. We got to Chioggia abt 4 & found all the women in their white veils going to church to hear the sermon today being the fête of the Madonna Dolorata. All the women wear a white cotton veil over their heads– Most of them put it on like an apron tied round the waist at the back & brought up over their heads– The churches were crammed full of women & it was a very picturesque sight. We went in to the Duomo wh is a very large fine building & we walked up the main street wh traverses the town. Coming home I made tea wh I had brought with me & Addie & I sketched the sunset. We got home abt 7. Herr Lutteroth, Mlle Bujard & Mlle de Perpigna, Mr Vigor dined with us & left early. Henry took Rachel, Addie & I for a last row. It was moonlight but very hot.
