31 October 1885 — Bologna
Saturday. 31st October [1885]. Henry & the Gregorys went out in the morng to see some of the churches & King Museum. I stayed in & wrote letters. M. & Mme Minghetti came to call at 12.30. I & Mme Minghetti went out to the antiquity shops & I bought an old piece of work to copy & a Battersea snuffbox & we parted in the street, she returned home & I to the Hotel Italie & we lunched at 2 oclock. After lunch the Gregorys, Henry & I walked to St Dominico to see the Shrine of that Saint & then walked back to the Piazza– Augusta Gregory & I walked on to the antiquary shop to pay for my embroidery & then joined the gentlemen at the hotel to be ready to start for Florence. Our train was to have left at 4.30 but on getting to the station we found it was 50 minutes behind hand as the train from Venice was that time behind & our train had to wait for it. The Gregorys & I went to get some coffee at the Restaurant but were hastily summoned by Henry to take our places—when we had done so we were shunted & there remained for a weary hour. There was an officer & his bride in our carriage– At last after much whistling & trumpetting we started an hour later than we ought to have done—& we continued to lose time at every station—& so arrived at Florence abt 12.30 instead of ¼ to 10. It was very rainy & we were very much exhausted. Mr Colnaghi met us & put us into a carriage & we went to the Hotel Gran Bretagne & Arno & got some tea & to bed, as soon as our luggage could be got from the station.
