15 November 1885 — Rome
Sunday. 15th [November 1885]. I woke with a headache but got up & went down to breakfast. Found Sir John suffering from a pain in his side from his fall last Wedy. He sent for his doctor & decided not to go to church– I therefore went upstairs & lay down till 12.30 when we had to go to lunch at the German Embassy. M. & Mme de Westenberg, Mr & Mrs Kennedy & M. de [illegible word] (German Minister at Stockholm) were there. I could eat no lunch & at last was obliged to leave the dining room. Mme Rendell kindly took me up to her room where I remained till it was time to leave abt 3 o’cl. We went straight back to the Embassy & I went to bed—& there remained.
