27 November 1885 — Basle
Friday. 27th [November 1885]. Left Basle by 8.40. While we were at breakfast we heard 2 Americans talking of the news of the death of Alfonso VII the King of Spain. It was a great surprise. There had been reports that he was delicate which had been vigorously contradicted even by Silvela who arrived at Rome from Madrid while we were at Rome. He was not 28 & had reigned ten years. We were at Madrid when he began his reign. We reached Paris at 6. Mr Belard met us. Dacre came to see us at the hotel for a few minutes.
