28 December 1885 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Monday. 28th [December 1885]. Mr Haynes came to settle my back drawing room curtains. At 12 I & Henry went to Rogers’ to look at a brougham on sale, & then we went our separate ways shopping. I looked in at Blanche’s a moment to enquire after her baby who was better & then went home to lunch to wh Frederick Layard & my sister Maria came at 1. After lunch Maria & I dawdled talking & so Henry & I nearly missed our train wh went from Waterloo at 1.30. The station master luckily was on the look out for us & took out tickets for us—but we kept the train 4 mins: while he & 4 porters tried to add up in their heads the sum we owed. At last the station master wrote it down & got another man to help him & the sum was done. Arthur had given orders to stop the express train for us at Templecombe so we arrived there in good time. It was a rough night & we were glad to get in abt 6.30. Dined at 7. Found Merthyr & Theo & Lady Westr well. Sat in the microscope room in the eveng & Henry, Lady W., Theo & I played whist.
