10 January 1886 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Sunday. 10th January [1886]. Maria & the twins came & carried me off to their church in Marylebone. I brought the twins home to lunch with us—& then took them out at 3 to church. Finding there were no services till 4 we got into a hansom & I went to Eaton Place to see Mrs Burr for the first time since the Squire’s death. I left the twins in her dining room & went up to Mrs Burr. She was well but her nerves much shattered. It was a very dangerous drive home as it snowed & froze. Sir Wm Smyth came to call & Monty– The latter stayed some time. Abt 6 Richard came to call & later Maria & her son Arthur. They had been down to Putney to see Temmy & found her going on well. My brother Arthur called just before dinner. We dined alone. The snow stopped about 9 oclock & it was not quite so cold.
