23 January 1886 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Saturday. 23rd [January 1886]. Snowed again in the night & was very cold. We went by 3.15 train down to Knebworth to stay with the Lyttons & travelled down with Count Hatzfeldt & Mr Fred Cadogan. We found the country deep in snow & when we arrived were told that there had been skating since 2 or 3 days. We got in for 5 o’cl tea & later came Lady Dorothy Neville, Lady Airlie & her daughter Lady Griselda Ogilvy, Ld Frederick Hamilton, Mr Curzon, Count Pourtalès (French Secy) & Genl. Brackenburg. We sat in the drawing room after dinner out of wd there was a miniature stage erected for their children’s acting.
