24 January 1886 — Knebworth House, nr. Stevenage, Hertfordshire
Sunday. 24th January [1886]. It snowed hard all night & was very cold. I went to church with the others. The church is close by the house & it was not snowing much—& the paths were cleared. I did not go out again but read Disraeli’s letter to his sister & tried to keep warm by the fire. We sat in the music room after dinner & Ld F. Hamilton amused us with comic imitations of singing & playing. He imitated a whole opera—an anthem—& a ld reading– Then Mr Cadogan sat down & sang & played numberless airs from different operas &c. He said that he was now too old to sing being 65 but he has a thoro knowledge of music & a classic style of singing.
