7 March 1886 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Sunday. 7th [March 1886]. Mildred had a letter to say her Aunt Mrs Fitzroy was much worse & not expected to live so I went off to see Arthur at 40 Half Moon St to see what he wished in case Mildred was sent for. I found Arthur in bed with a bad cold. I sat some time with him & then went to St James Westmoreland St for the end of the service. Mr Vigor came to luncheon with us. Directly after lunch I went off to the German Embassy & fetched Nelly Hatzfeldt & took her to Westr Abbey for 3 o’cl service. We came away before the end of it. We walked then across St James Park but Nelly had the carriage to fetch her at 4.30 & I drove with her as far as Chapel St walking home from there. I went to tea with Blanche. We dined at Lord & Lady Wolseley’s at a dinner of 20 people. Mr Froude took me in to dinner & I had Lord Buckinghamshire on my right—Hobart P’s nephew so we soon made friends. Next to Froude sat Mr Henry James the American novelist & next him Miss Maude Valerie White the composer. Froude talked a great deal about the Colonies & his last book Oceana & was very pleasant. Lord B. told me of his life in the Far West where he had spent 7 years. We also talked much abt Hobart P’s wife & agreed that she was a curious woman & a mystery & that we both of us disliked & mistrusted her. After dinner Miss White sang & played charmingly.
