28 March 1886 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Sunday. 28th March [1886]. I went to my seat in Haweis’ chapel & Mrs Cyril Flower née Rothschild being without a seat I gave her one. I remained at home all the afternoon– Ct Corti & Ct Jacques Pourtalès called– Mama dined with us. She told us that my Aunt Felicia Lady Lindsey has brought up May Bertie from Brighton very ill with terrible pain in her leg. Gull was called in & he called in Paget. They saw Mary at 12 & said she had an abcess & it must be operated upon at once so they performed the operation under cholorform at 3. Mama was present instead of Felicia who had not nerve for it. Gull, Sir James Paget, his son & Dr Bailey who administered ether were all there. After dinner Mama & I got into a cab & drove off to Almond’s Hotel in Clifford St to enquire after her. We found the Drs there & they reported all going so far well—so we returned home at once.
