5 May 1886 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Wednesday. 5th May [1886]. Edgar came to luncheon & we drove him down to 34 Princes Gardens where we picked up Lady Bagot & all went together to the “Colindes” as they call the Colonial & Indian Exhibition. It was a fashionable 2/6 day & we saw a great many people we knew & altho’ it was very interesting it was very tiring & at 5 we were very glad to go to Lady Bagots & rest & have a cup of tea. We took Edgar as far as Cavendish Sqr & then I went in & arranged the flowers on our dinner table. We had a party especially for Sir Wm & Lady Gregory on their return from India, Lady Dorothy Neville, Sir Arthur Otway, Mrs Kay, Lord Hardinge, Sir F. Burton, Mr Newton, Mr & Mrs Arthur Birch, Miss Duff Gordon & Edgar. Dinner was going on merrily eno’ when of a sudden there was a loud noise and the centre lamp exploded—luckily no one was hurt the glass did not fly far & only Miss D. Gordon screamed & pushed back her chair. She was soon pacified but the crystal oil poured down over the table deluging the flowers & dessert & making too horrible a smell. There was no help for it & we had to finish our dinner in the perfume & bear it as we could.
