6 May 1886 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Thursday. 6th May [1886]. We went at 1.30 to lunch at the German Embassy to meet HIH the Crown Princess of Prussia. Met there Lord Napier of Magdala who took me in to lunch, Lord & Lady Wolseley, Sir P. & Lady Cunliffe Owen & some German officials. Ct Seckendorff was with the Pss & Genl DuPlat, the latter sat next to me & was very pleasant. After a long meal we went to the upper drawing rooms & there chatted till the Pss left soon after 4. We talked about the success of the opening of the exhibition & I told her to tell the Queen what I had heard the workman in the crowd say for I knew she would like it. She said she wd certainly do so. I went in search of Maria at Hamilton Hse at 4.15 but she had gone. I called on Felicia & saw her & Mary & then went home to see if Merthyr & Theo had arrived to stay with [us]. Found they had come but were both gone out again. I walked up to Maria’s & had tea with her & then we went in a cab to Covent Garden to do some commissions for a fancy dress for S. Hambro & back home. Dined with the Misses Duff Gordon & there met Mme Reyntiens & Browning. A Mr Bingham took me in to dinner. Mme R. sang in evening. M. Blumenthal the pianist was also there.
