8 June 1886 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Tuesday. 8th June [1886]. I took a cab in the morning & went to see Mrs Rate & then on to the Stores to buy some nickel silver spoons & forks for use in Norway & then home to lunch. Old John Murray & Maria Du Cane lunched with us & then she drove out with us. I went with Henry to call on Lady Somers & to talk over the subscription for the reproducing of Watts fresco at Lincoln’s Inn in mosaic. Home to tea & then went to see Blanche & help her to put up flowers as she had a dinner party. Edward came in & told me he had ascertained that Henry’s name had been put down for a seat in Parliament—that he had just been to tell Henry about it but that Henry had begged him to withdraw his name as he did not wish to stand in case of a dissolution on acct of the fatigue it would be to him. This is a great disappointment to me as I think he might have done great service to the country but he must know best. B. got a telegram from one of her invite’s to put off coming so Edward & I went off to see if we could get a girl to fill the place. In Portland Place we met Maria & he invited her Nela. I went home & dressed & we went to dine at Lady Lyttons at a house they have taken in Port: Pce. Met Lady Lathom & her daughter Bertha, Lord Cranborne, & Mr Elwin. The latter took me in to table. I was very tired. We went home early.
