7 July 1886 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Wednesday. 7th [July 1886]. Pouring wet in tremendous showers. Wrote letters. Post came. Henry caught 2 salmon 19 & 15 lbs. I fished in vain at the bridge. Fred caught 15 lb. salmon at Syltebo’s Rest. I came in & read & had some tea. We dined at 7. I played cribbage with Edgar. At 10 I went out with John to the bridge. Before I got ½ way across I hooked a fish, ran round to the bank, got into the boat & went down to the bank where I landed a 17½ lb. salmon. I ran up to the house to announce my success while John took a boat up to Syltebo’s Rest– I returned there & fished the rest without success. John said “better go back to the bridge” & back we went. In 5 mins, I had hooked another fish who nearly took me off my feet with the way he ran & took out my line. When I recovered my senses I ran off the bridge & got into the boat wh John had brought down from Gredhus– We went down to the bank & after a deal of trouble John safely landed a 14 lb. salmon– It was far more lively & active than the larger fish. I came home tired. Had tea & went to bed. Henry went out but got nothing.
