16 September 1886 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 16th [September 1886]. Arranged cupboards &c. Mr Horatio Brown called in morning. I did not go out till after dinner when we took a row. Between our house & the Piazza we do not meet a single gondola of an evening. A great many shops & nearly all the hotels are bankrupt as the cholera which has been going on all the summer has kept people away. There are still 2 or 3 cases daily but nothing to be afraid of.
