27 November 1886 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 27th [November 1886]. I went to the Academy for the last time to finish up my copy of Mantegna’s St George. While there the “commissione” wh came to see the new room just made for Titian’s assumption came to the room where I was & I was presented to Cavalieres Favretto, Carlini, Gabriel by Barozzi & they did me the honor of approving my efforts not that any one of them knew one old picture from another. It was very cold & there had been a frost in the night. Home to lunch– Coffee in the Belvedere—splendid sunshine. Henry went to Murano with Mr Smith the London Stabto agent. Mrs Brown called & I went out abt 3.15. Paid visits & met Mr Peabody Russell in his sandalo & found his wife in gallery much better. Home at 5, found Cortelazzo arrived. Mrs Eden & Maud Hammersley & Baron Bregeleben came to tea. We dined at ¼ 7 & Henry & I went to the Operetta at the Malibran to see Boccaccio. It was very full of common people 2 of whom were not very sober & made a great noise. I left soon after 10 & went to the Curtis who received for the last time. I came away at 11.30. Had tea with Henry—a game of patience & to bed– Cortelazzo brought us his table centre piece finished.
