3 March 1887 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Thursday. 3rd March [1887]. While I was busy putting up the flowers Mr P. Russell had had sent up to me from his place in the Isle of Wight Mama came in to see me to beg me to go off to see Arthur as Mildred had heard from her mother insisting that she would take her to the Drawing room & present her. I went at once in a cab & walked back after not seeing Arthur who was gone out. I went to Langham House & told Mama—saw Kate & then came home bringing Mildred to help me with the flowers till lunch. Drove out with Henry afternoon & went to see Mrs Bagot & called in the hopes of seeing Addie Tavistock on her return from the drawing room in Court dress but at 5 she had not returned so I went home & rested after tea till dinner. Blanche came in for a few moments. We had Sir Wm & Lady Gregory, Arthur, Mrs Burr & Isabel Scobell, Sir F. Burton, Sir Henry Thompson, Mrs Kay & Mr & Mrs Rate. Mildred came in the evening. After all had gone Arthur showed us a letter he had today received from Cornelia saying she considered it advisable to receive Adeline for Mildred’s sake & begged to inform him she meant to do so. He went to see her & told her that if she adhered to this resolution he would never again go to her house. She remained firm & Arthur left her but he was terribly upset.
