8 May 1887 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 8th May [1887]. Mr Colnaghi & Katie left for Florence by middle day train so I did not go to church but remained talking to Katie & gave them lunch & saw them off. Henry & I went to the Marciana library to be present at the opening of the Bessarione room by the Queen– We were taken to the Senate room in the Ducal Palace. Henry & I were placed on the platform—the girls had seats in front of us among the audience. The Queen came at 2 accompanied by her Household. M. Castellani the chief librarian read a speech which made us all rather sleepy & then the Queen went to see the manuscripts wh were arranged in the new room under glass– Mrs Eden was there & we agreed with her to go off at once to the garden & have tea & so we set off & spent a pleasant afternoon there. After dinner Henry took the girls out for a row by moonlight.
