7 May 1887 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 7th May [1887]. Worked sewing machine. Went out with Lady Aberdare in afternoon. Dressed before dinner to go to the Queen’s reception or “circulo” & got to the Palace at 10. We found a great many people arrived & were put into different rooms– Those foreigners who had previously been presented & who had wives & daughters with them in the first room—we were in it. In another room those who had not been presented, Italians & another for the men unaccompanied by their ladies. At 10.30 the Queen came out of her apartment accompanied by Marchesa Villa Marina, & Marchesa Ottaiano & Css Papadopoli who has just been named one of the Queen’s ladies & who did her part very prettily & simply & looked very nice. The Queen spoke to all in turn in their own language, the names being read out from a list by Mme Villa Marina. H.M. then went into the other rooms & ices & sweets were handed round. It was past 12 when the Queen had gone the round of her circulo—& made a graceful curtsey & retired into her own appartments & we were the first to get away home. Mr Colnaghi accompanied us & Ola & Nela Du Cane also much to their delight.
