30 May 1887 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 30th [May 1887]. Index—& finished it before breakfast. It being Nela’s birthday we prepared her a breakfast with flowers & presents on her plate. Nela & I arranged a subject to paint a study in the studio & drew industriously all the morng till past 12. I then began a small copy of our Bellini Madonna in the boudoir. I went out in gondola to pay visits. Went to Css Marcello & there met M. P. Bourget the French novelist—a thick set dark little man not very distinguished looking. Fetched Henry & Nela at the Stabto & brought them home. They had been to the Exhibition. Henry took out the girls in the gondola after dinner. I went to bed at 9 with a cold. There was a “fresco” on the canal.
