9 June 1887 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 9th [June 1887]. Today being the “Corpus Domini”—the girls & Sir Frederic Alston went off at 8 oclock to see the procession at S. Marks. They said to come out of the church at one door & went in at another just going into the Piazza. Henry & I breakfasted at 9—the others at 10.30 when they returned. Went on with my copy of Bellini till 2 lunch. At 4 Henry, Sir F. & I went to the Edens garden. There we met Lady Louisa Legge—Ersilia & Mme Neville. We were starting home at 6 when Ersilia offered to take me & then added that if I would dine with them it would be a good place. This I agreed to do & we remained on with the Edens & only got back to Ersilia’s house a little after 7. Count Canevaro, the 2 Cozzi brothers—a naval officer, Maria, her sister & their 2 boys made up the number. Afterwards several gentlemen came in. Count Canevaro sent out to buy Bengal lights & burnt them on the balcony & afterwards under the windows of our house. At abt 9 the Canevaros & I went out for a row. At the giardinetto we met our gondola & we bid them follow us & we went under the bridge of sighs & lit Bengal lights & so all along the small canals till we came out near the Rialto. Count Canevaro landed, we gave our remaining lights to Nela, Ola & Ersilia & I went on up the grand canal as far as the Vendramin palace & there we found all lighted up as the Countess de Bardi was giving a party & had the Hungarian band playing. It was a pretty sight. Home to bed.
