30 June 1887 — La Punta, Longarone
Thursday. 30th [June 1887]. Got up at 6 but did not start till 8 as the carriage was late coming from Longarone. It was fine but cloudy & so we had a very cool drive. We had 3 horses. At Tai we changed horses & the 2 girls & I walked on a bit, were picked up by Henry. We got to Cortina about 1 & were greeted by Lady Louisa Legge & found the table d’hôte just about to begin so we joined it & afterwards the girls & I walked on with Lady Louisa & her friend Miss Salt in search of flowers. Lady Louisa did not go very far & when she left us & returned to Cortina we hurried on to a wood where we found a few flowers & were picked up by Henry in the carriage. When we got to the top of the Ampezzo we found some lovely flowers—there were masses of little blue gentian with primula & pinguicula & wreaths of a pale mauve clematis. We got Henry to allow us to stop the carriage several times & got lots of them. Also masses of a pink flower we think is Daphne– A boy brought us some ladies slipper orchids & a white lily & we were enraptured with the flowers & longed to linger over them but had to get on. We arrived at Niederdorf abt 6 & I set to work to paint the clematis. Nela had a headache & had soup in her room. We had an excellent dinner & very good trout. Played patience till bed time.
