9 July 1887 — Cologne
Saturday. 9th July [1887]. We breakfast at 8 in order to go out at 9. We drove to S. Ursula’s church & saw the soi disant bones of the 11000 virgins & tried to look grave at all the wonderful things told us about them by the sacristan. Then by 10 we went to the Cathedral. Unfortunately we found a funeral service going on there and as they are very (rightly) particular that people should behave quietly during the service there was no possibility of walking about to see the church. We sat a long time listening to the service & hoping that it might soon be coming to an end but at last I asked the beadle & he told me we should have to wait till 12.30. As we had not time for that we had to give up the idea & we walked back to Disch’s having some difficulty in findg our way but by dint of repeated asking we succeeded. At 12 we lunched & then went off to Lille. We had an hour to wait at Brussels & dined there. We got to Lille at 10.25 & went to Grand Hotel—a regular oldfashioned French inn & got rooms. Had tea & went to bed.
