3 August 1887 — Lisdoonvarna
Wednesday. 3rd August [1887]. Breakfasted at table d’hôte at 9. There were a good many people who were staying there to drink the waters & who eat a huge breakfast. There were R.C. priest who did not dare look us women in the face—there were Irish men with terrific brogues. One devoured a plate of porridge, others mutton chops– The food was good. It was rather showery after breakfast but Lady Gregory, Mr Doyle & I went to see the sulphur springs & the iron springs. There were quantities of Irish priests going to & fro it being a favorite ecclesiastical resort. Sir Wm found in the hotel a Mr Reddington whom he knew, one of the magistrates who told Henry a great deal abt the state of Ireland. At abt 11.30 we got into our waggonette & drove off, the luggage & provisions following in a car as yesterday. We drove thro’ Kilfenora where we got out of the carriage to see the old Irish cross & the ruined church—part of which is still in good order & used as a Protestant church. We drove by the ruins of where a grave was being dug for the station master of Corrofin & the human bones, sculls & pieces of coffin were being turned up at every spade full in a way to make one shudder. We stopped at an old half ruined round tower still with its outer bastions divided into 3 floors. We passed by the shell of the house lived in by Mary O’Ruagh who was queen of the country in the time of Cromwell. The road goes close by it & goes thro’ the gateways which enclosed her property & one can distinguish the great wall that went round it. We got back to Coole passing thro’ the town of Gort abt 6.30 having had a charming expedition. We lunched at abt 2 above the beautiful lake of Inchiquin & had an excellent appetite & having a splendid view.
