24 August 1887 — Kylemore Castle, nr. Recess, County Galway
Wednesday. 24th August [1887]. Wrote letters after breakfast. At 11 went out fishing. There was a good southerly breeze blowing & we all made sure of catching fish. Lord Normanby went out on the pool—I on the lake—but all in vain. It blew in such strong gusts that I could at times hardly stand in the boat but I never even rose a salmon so I gave it up about 1 & walked to the Pool to find out about the “Marquis.” He had hooked a salmon & lost it—so we came up to lunch. Abt 4 we went for a drive with Mrs Henn, Mr Mitchell Henry & Augusta Gregory. We went to Renfyle to the house of a Mrs Blake’s, a curious little house down on the sea shore. Outside the house is covered with scales of small slates & is long & low being only two stories– Inside it is panelled with oak and is very quaint. We paid Mrs Blake a visit in a quaint little room full of books. Her sister received us & then Mrs Blake came looking worn & worried in a plain gown & a blue apron & bib. When things got so bad in Ireland & at the death of her husband she found herself almost penniless the brave little woman determined to turn her house into an hotel & has arranged to be able to lodge 25 people. In the summer her house is always full & it answers very well.
