29 September 1887 — La Punta, Longarone
Thursday. 29th September [1887]. When we woke in the morning it was raining so Zoldo had to be given up & as the Pss was anxious abt the Crown Prince she decided on going on to Venice where the Cn Prince had gone direct from Toblach. I drove with the Cn Princess & Pss Victoria in Malcolm’s carriage. It poured hard. We had to stop a second in Longarone while the Sindaco in the pouring rain, hat in hand & evening clothes made the Pss a little speech—& then on we went. Luckily just as we got to the Lake of Sta Croce the rain stopped and a gleam of sun came up which made the Cn Pss see how beautiful it could be. We opened the carriage a while—but as we got nearer Vittorio the rain came with redoubled force & we had to close it again. We went to the Hotel Vittorio kept by our Milanese friend & had an excellent lunch. We met the Hurtados there who were also on their way back to Venice. We had to hurry up to the station. After we were all in the carriage we saw the luggage of our party all left on the platform– With their 5 servants not one had thought of seeing to it. Count Seckendorff had to jump out & register it himself. He said that the servants would do nothing & as they were state appointments it was no use to say anything, they did not mind as they could only be dismissed by ct martial. We got to Venice abt 5. The Royal party went to Hotel d’Europe & we returned home to Mama & Kate.
