28 September 1887 — La Punta, Longarone
Wednesday. 28th [September 1887]. Assisted Mr Malcolm to prepare the rooms for the Royal Party. He had a telegram to say the Cn Pss, Pss Victoria, Count Seckendorff & Css Perponcher & 5 servants would arrive in the afternoon. About 5 they drove up in two carriages. We gave them tea & then took them up to their rooms. There was a sittingroom for the Pss & as it was chilly we lighted the fire—out came volumes of smoke– We called the agent & his wife & discovered that the register was down! Both the Princesses were in fits of laughter, we opened windows & doors but the smoke made us cough & cry & still we all roared. Nothing would persuade the register to move—the agent kept saying “Che materie sopra” in the building bricks & mortar had come down the chimney & kept the register fast! At last after carrying away all the fire & getting a man to work the register was opened & the fire relighted! We dined at 7 and went to bed early. The weather seemed changing—& a visit to Zoldo the next day seemed problematical.
