Sunday. 2nd October [1887]. Went to service with Mama & Kate at the Grand Hotel. It is the first service held by the new chaplain Canon Scarth & was an immense improvement on poor old Mr Mereweather who for the last 30 years has droned out a service in his rooms at the top of the Contarini degli Scrigni. Kate & I went on board the gun boat to join the 3 Princesses & Mlle de Perpigna to go to Malamocco to see the Italian ships of war & lunch with Adl Acton. The Chevalier [illegible word] accompanied us there being for the time Director of the Venice Arsenal. We went on board the Admiral’s ship the                and he gave us an excellent lunch & then we went round the ship & returned to Venice abt 5. The Crown Princess & Princesses Victoria & Sophy dined with us. Pss Margaret remained at the hotel to see after her father.
