31 December 1887 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 31st [December 1887]. I went to paint at the studio & took the Trevelyans home in gondola. I then went to see Css Pisani & found her in her gondola going off to the station so I got in & went with her. She was very nice & kind—& amongst other things asked me why I did not make up a match between Ola & Mr B. I thought it curious as Ersilia had said the same thing. She also encouraged me to go to San Remo to see the Cn P. & Pss to see abt getting Henry a P. & begged me to put aside my British shyness. I got home just in time for lunch. Afterwards Lady Galway called & also Miss Ames & Miss Witherell the former quite recovered of her illness. Just as I was going out Mrs Brown came so I asked her to take me to the Grand Hotel for the choir practise. On the way to my surprise she spoke of her great desire to see her son chose Ola– It seemed me a sort of Providence & quite took me aback. We shall see if it is to be. After the practise I walked home with Mr Jamison by T time. The servants had their usual supper party. Henry, Ola, Raymond & I spent a quiet evening & went to bed after the stroke of 12.
