11 February 1888 — Rome | |
Saturday. 11th February [1888]. Lilah came & had a guitar lesson from me. After lunch Henry & I walked to the Gregorys & I arranged to fetch her at 5 & to go to see Mme Minghetti together. Then H & I took a cab & went to St Peters when I became confirmed in my idea that I did not admire it and that setting apart its great size there is nothing in it which appeals to me. We looked into the chapel where vespers were going on—the music not very good & the whole business not impressive. Drove back to Due Macelli & I had tea with Lady Bagot & then called for Augusta Gregory & went off in a cab to Mme Minghetti & paid our visit– Home to hotel & dressed & went to dine with the D & Dss of Sermoneta. Met there Senator Barraco & Count Corti & Ct & Css Pasolini, Mme Minghetti & Bonghi. We had a splendid dinner, oysters, turtle soup, salmon, truffles, quails & every delicacy. Count Corti was complaining of feeling ill and had shivering fits we all recommended him to take precautions– I had a long talk with him about the way Crispi had removed him from the Embassy in London– He was very low about it but I said I had no doubt he would come back into diplomacy as in Italy those kind of things depended so much on personal spite & if Crispi went out of office he would come back again. Corti said that for this year he should keep quite quiet but that next year he intended taking an active part in the Senate. We all recommended him different remedies for his cold when we parted. | |
