10 February 1888 — Rome | |
Friday. 10th February [1888]. Got up late not being quite well. Henry & I went to lunch with the Maxwells (Genl & Mrs) at the Via Palestro. At the door we met the Gregorys and they startled me by saying “So that poor Crown Prince has had the operation.” It appears he had to have tracheotomy—so I am afraid that he cannot be so well as he seemed to us. Sir John Savile was at lunch & had a terrible cough. He told us that Bacelli is treating him for gout & keeping him on a cold diet. After lunch Henry went off with Sir Wm & I went for a drive to the Villa Doria with Augusta Gregory. the Genl & Mrs Maxwell. It was lovely up there & very enjoyable. Had a visit from Dr Nevin & from Lilah. The latter returned after dinner & we practised guitar together. | |
