9 February 1888 — Rome | |
Thursday. 9th February [1888]. Took a little walk in the morning with Henry, met Mrs Bruce at the top of the Trinita steps. At 2 Lady Gregory, Ola & I went to Mme de Westenberg’s house to see what was to be seen of the Carnival which was nothing. Only 2 horse carriages were allowed in the Corso—but there were none—there was only a crowd of roughs trying amuse themselves. The balconies all prepared & dressed up were empty. I was taken very unwell & had to ask for a little brandy. At 4.30 I walked on to the Dss of Sermoneta to meet Consul Frary about the Glasgow Exn. Mrs Kennedy was also there– When Mr Frary was gone I was again taken bad & the Dss gave me Ginger brandy & then Mrs Kennedy drove me back to the hotel in her carriage. When I got there I felt better & ran off to the Hotel Victoria where the Gregorys had a tea party. I found Lady Denbergh, & others. Returned to the table d’hôte at 6.30. | |
