8 February 1888 — Rome
Wednesday. 8th [February 1888]. Henry’s lumbago having returned we sent for Dr Drummond. Lilah came to play the guitar with me in morng. Had a visit from Mme Minghetti. The Gregorys came & took a walk with them in Corso & back at hotel at 4. At 5 went to tea with the Lanciani’s. We dined (H & I) at Mrs R. Bruce’s and met there the Gregorys and Mrs Peirera & girl, Mrs & Miss Howard & Mr Howard, M. & Marchesa Vitelleschi, Mr Newdigate. It was an excellent repast and very pleasant party. We had to leave early in order to go to the Court Ball. We found ourselves rather late & could not get into the Ballroom—but as luck would have it we met Marquis Gavotti who got us in by a side door used by the Roman Princesses & we got in just as the K & Q arrived & saw the Quadrille d’honneur in which the Prince of Naples danced viz a viz to the Queen. When it was over D. Carlo d’Adda came & offered me his arm to take a turn & we went & finally settled in the next room where it was cooler. There we met Ct Sormani Moretti who took me back to the Ballroom & placed me with the Corps diplomatique where I found Mme Heyermann & was sitting with her when the Queen came. I got into the 2nd row & the Queen was just in front of me & after a while she turned & talked to me over her shoulder. I told her we had been at San Remo & she talked of the Cn Prince. Very soon she moved on & as Henry was suffering a good deal from his lumbago we made our way out & got home by 12.15. I wore the same dark blue velvet I had worn at the court ball here the last time I was at Court here soon after we left Consple. It has just been arranged & done up at Paris with my old lace & white & gold front.
