4 April 1888 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 4th April [1888]. I got up at 6 & went to the station accompanied by Hallam to go by the 7.5 train to Vescovana to see Css Pisani who has been ill. Hallam put me into the train & Mr Brown went with me to Vescovana. It was a slow train & we did not reach Stanghella till 10.40. It rained hard all the way & there were hardly any signs of spring. We were met at the station by the Countess’ brougham & she came down to her front door wrapped up in a shawl. We had a very short time to be with her. She gave us luncheon & we sat & talked with her & she took us to see her linen cupboards which in all good Italian houses is a very important part of the house & where she had piles of beautiful “napery.” We left again soon after 1 as we had to drive to St. Elena to catch the express train back to Venice– The train was 40 min: late so we took a walk in the country while waiting. The Countess loaded us with sausages, fowls & other delicacies wh we carried home. I was home for 5 o’cl T. Several people came to tea– The weather had been so bad our party had not gone to Torcello as they had intended.
