12 May 1888 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Saturday. 12th [May 1888]. I went to have another lesson in guitar. Lunched early & went off to the opening of the Italian Exhibition. We had Italian colored ribbons given us to wear and we were supposed to be the Committee to receive the Lord Mayor who came to open it. It was pleasant talking to the Committee Lds Aberdare, Esher, Sir J. Goldschmidt, Sir A. Bosthwick, & a lot of others including Senatore Bonghi. When the Lord Mayor did arrive there was such a rush that no order was kept. Ld Esher dragged me into the procession & we walked next the Ld Mayor hemmed & pushed by the crowd & managed to get up on to the platform in the tent where speeches were made & I was presented to Sir Keyser & the Lady Mayoress. I got away as soon [as] the speeches were over and the Mayor’s procession moved off. I found Henry sitting at the V. Murano glass stall with Lady Galway & other friends & had given up the attempt to follow the procession. We then came home & had tea in my bedroom & I rested till dinner. Maria came to see me. Nela & Virginia Du Cane & Audrey & Madeleine Trevelyan dined with us.
