17 June 1888 — Molde
Sunday. 17th June [1888]. We arrived at Molde at about 8– Having stopped at Aalesunde in the early morning the news of the sad death of the Emperor Frederic was given to us. When we left Hull on Thursday evening the accounts of him in the evening paper were such as to take away all hope & he died on Friday morning at 11. Altho we had so long expected it yet it was a blow—& one cannot help thinking of the scenes that must be enacting at Frederichkron where the poor Empress & her girls are in the first great fresh grief & what a loss the Emperor will be to his family & his country. After passing our things thro’ the custom house & leaving Dahl (our lalk) & the servants to get our luggage on board the little steamer “Molde” we walked up to the Alexander hotel and ordered lunch at 12.30 there. Fred, Raymond & I went for a walk & came back to lunch. At 3 we went on board the Molde & Consul Dahl met us there & saw us off & we had a delightful passage up the Fjord getting to Nöste abt 8.30. The good fat wife of our Capt made us coffee au lait & wished us all “Willkommen til Norge” & shook hands with us. Annie the cook & I landed first & rushed up to the house to get out stores & prepare a meal for we were hungry. We found Berret the maid was married & had got twins but she had sent her sister Marrit in her place & all was in order & the water boiling so Annie was soon at work & abt 10 we sat down to a very good supper from tinned materials & had all settled ourselves & then went to bed.
