18 June 1888 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Monday. 18th June [1888]. Breakfast at 9 & busy morning unpacking & arranging & settling ourselves. Went for a walk down by river. Dined at 4. Went up to lake to fish. Started at 5. I drove our carriole with Rayd & Dahl. Fred drove the other with Thorwald. Berret came up in morning to see me. She is married & had twins 3 weeks ago. She had put her sister Marrit to do housemaid in her place. Caught nothing in lake. Fred killed one trout ¾ lbs. While waiting for a boat Mme Haande took me into her cottage & made me eat some wafer cakes sour milk & fresh. She talks away in Norsk to me & I did not understand much except that she knew I was Guests sister. She gave me some gaudy looking ribbons & then pulled up her petticoats to show me they were for garters! & she made me carry them away. She was a good looking woman & I understand had 8 sons—one of whom was in Amerika & she showed me his photograph. Got home abt 9.30. Supper & bed.
