6 July 1888 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Friday. 6th [July 1888]. Not well & got up late & I kept my bed for a couple of days & was not much about until Wednesday 11th when I not being quite right sent for the Norwegian Dr who arrived on his monthly visit to the valley. Dahl brought him up in the carriole & I tried to make him understand my ailments in French but to my surprise he said—well but we shall see the patient. I again much to his surprise explained again that I was the patient then he went out to the carriole & fetched in a box like a pedlar pack & unlocking it he took out some powders, mixed one in water & bid me swallow it. Then we called in Dahl who interpreted the message I had for him about a sick nurse Monty wished to establish in the valley. He agreed to make enquiries for me & to let Monty know. When we had dined I declared I must go & fish again & Henry, Fred, Rayd & Leo all declared jokingly that they would come down & see me catch a salmon so we went to the bridge in procession & I began to fish. In abt ¼ as I was turning to speak to someone I had a fish on. Thorwald was there & I ran round to the boat & after about an hour’s sharp work I landed a 20 lb. fish at Lower Gredhus & we all returned home together I really rather exhausted.
