15 August 1888 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Wednesday. 15th August [1888]. Wrote for post. Made up salmon lists. Cloudy & showery day. Raymond meant to have gone out to shoot rype but it was too wet. Today is the first day of rype shooting. I fished the Gredhus pools with John in afternoon & got one sea trout. Dinner at 4.30 & directly afterwards I & Raymond went off in the carriole. I dropped him at Bjornes to fish & Andreas & I went on the great Lake & I fished the Up. Haande pool & got only one tiny trout, so I came home by 9. It was showery. When I returned I found Henry fishing the Upper Gredhus & he told me that he had lost a salmon in Fagerslet & that I had better fish Lr Gredhus for trout. I did not get one but hooked a big salmon & had to take it down to the mouth of the river. I was joined there by Leo & Raymond. The fish sank & there I remained till ¼ past 12 when in the pitch dark John gaffed what proved to be a 41 lb salmon. Leo had gone home tired of waiting to see the finale but Raymond remained & blew the horn he happened to have in his pocket when the fish was landed. Thorwald had joined us & helped John to carry up the fish & we walked home in procession Raymond blowing the horn. Supper & went to bed. It was so dark when the fish was landed that John had to let my line pass thro’ his hand to know where the fish was.
