3 September 1888 — Brightwell House, nr. Wallingford, Berkshire
Monday. 3rd [September 1888]. Got up to breakfast. It was a showery day. Trimmed my black bonnet & Ruth sat with me & helped. Luncheon at 1. Went for a drive in waggonette with Maria, Richard, July & Ola. Went to Wormsley, tried in vain to get into the house. There was no one there so we had to give up the attempt to see the collection of Lane family pictures. This key is said to be kept by a gardener who lives a mile off. Got home about 6. Had tea. Dined at 8. Revd Mr Day the old Rector of 82 dined with them & brought his parish register to show Henry. It begins in the reign of Henry 8th & is interesting. Mr Day is a charming dapper old gentleman as bright & clever as tho’ he were only 40.
