8 September 1888 — Talygarn, nr. Llantrisant, Glamorgan
Saturday. 8th September [1888]. Breakfast at 10. Henry & I sat in our room reading old journals & letters of his aunts’. We found very curious letters from Disraeli begging money of Mr Austen & wh he seems to have got & not to have paid back for a long time & on account of which there came a final quarrel & estrangement. After lunch Mr Clark took us to see the new church he is building in memory of his wife– It is simple & well done & is an improvement on the little barn like one close by wh is to be turned into a school. Came in & read aloud Mrs Austen’s journal of her tour in Italy in 1829 very interesting & well written. Dinner at 8. I played backgammon with Mr Clark till bed time.
