7 October 1888 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 7th [October 1888]. We all went to the English service in the room at the Venezia-Murano in the morning. In afternoon the others went to Lido. I remained at home. Henry, Lord Aberdare & I dined with the Edens & met Mr & Mrs Batten. The latter sang in the evening very beautifully, with great feeling & expression & accompanied herself beautifully—but with all this & her good looks she did not please me & seemed very mauvais genre. She is very much got up decolleté & with jewelry &c anything but good taste & she sings with too much minauderie.
